Christian devotions in the Daily-Message

What should I say?

“Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Then said I, Ah, Lord God! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. But the Lord said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord. Then the Lord put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have put My words in thy mouth.”

Jeremiah 1:4-9

Sometimes, when I sit down to write a devotional for the day, my thoughts go on strike. I can't think of what I should say to you...but wait, “what I should say to you”? It is not about me, my ideas and imagination! I am just the messenger and have to say whatever God says!

Once that becomes clear to me again, I become humble and talk to the Lord. I open His Word and read what He has to say to me. My word is just a simple human word, but His has power and creative force. Has any person every been able to create anything, however minuscule, with his mere word! God's Word however created the entire world and everything on it!

Thus the person who can communicate well and has a lot of Bible knowledge is not necessarily a good preacher – a good preacher is in the first instance a good listener, who hears God's Word, who has a personal relationship with God and passes on that which he hears from God.

How often are we prompted to talk about God, but we think that we are too young, we can't speak well enough, we are not important enough or whatever...

Maybe you never stand behind a pulpit, maybe you don't write any devotionals – and yet you are prompted to speak about your faith in God to others, whether it is with your family, with friends, at school or at work. God already knows all the excuses that you may come up with, but He wants to and will give you the words to speak, when you are ready to open your mouth.

It is Him who spoke at the Creation, He spoke to Israel and He still speaks to us today. And He will also speak when we stand before His heavenly throne. Only His Word counts, not that which we come up with.

When last did you hear God speak? When and to whom did you tell it?

I wish you a blessed day with a heart that is ready to hear from God.
