“I don't care who becomes chancellor under me”, the Spiegel quoted the CSU Chairman Franz-Josef Strauß in 1975. Yesterday I read a saying on the Austrian Federal Presidential election that reminded me of this quotation: “No matter who becomes president, Jesus is King!”
Especially now in the Advent, we are preparing for the coming of Jesus, our King. We just had the 2nd Advent. There are still another two Advents. More than 2,000 years ago, Jesus came into the world as a baby, but He is coming again for a second time, at a time no-one except the Father knows.
At that time Jesus was King in the Kingdom of God. Many Jews expected that the Messiah would also take up the worldly throne – and thus did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah. Many believed, after Jesus' capture, that He would now call legions of heavenly armies to seize power. However, it didn't happen and Jesus was crucified and buried. But, on the third day He rose again and thereafter ascended to His Father in heaven.
On the second Advent, when Jesus comes to Earth a second time, He will take control of the secular government, and He will rule over the world with us, for the Kingdom of God will commence its completion.
So someone may rule over our country at this stage, but it is only temporary. Jesus, however is King for all time, from eternity to eternity. Even if it is of interest to us who the secular ruler is here and now, when we see this in eternal perspective it is relatively insignificant. Our only hope today is that we are able to live a relatively peaceful, good life and live out our faith.
Chancellors and presidents come and go – but Jesus is King for all time!
I wish you a blessed day under your eternal King.
