Light illuminates the darkness

''Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.''

Matthew 5:14-15

On stormy, dark winter evenings it can be very cosy by candlelight, but otherwise I prefer it to be quite bright. In my apartment I usually have a light on in the room in which I find myself at any given time. I often don't get sufficient light coming in through the windows. I am not very fond of twilight.

Today's scripture speaks of not placing a light under a bushel. The light should illuminate the entire house. Everything should be bright and clearly visible.

People who have something to hide, who don't want others to see what they are doing, prefer to remain in the darkness.

But, today's scripture does not stop there. We should not only live in the light, but should also be the light! Not only in our house, no, the light to the entire world. We should so to speak shine our light from a mountain top, lighting up the entire world.

To remain in the light can be something very passive. Although, we have nothing to hide, we also don't accomplish anything positive. Whoever thus becomes the light, is active, he is not only in good company, he improves society in that he himself accomplishes something positive!

Jesus said of Himself (John 8:12) that He is the Light of the world. It is Him who expels the darkness. We should imitate Him, in that we ourselves also becomes lights in the world. He is our example, who we should imitate because it is our duty to follow Him. When observing us, others should easily recognize the difference between a believer and an unbeliever.

When we start to light up the world, like Jesus, it becomes a little brighter, more beautiful and better, then we start being an example to others on how to live a good life.

Have you flicked the switch in your life? Are you shining light into the darkness of the world?

I wish you a blessed day in the true light of our Lord!
